The Falling

Xander

Barda took his place on Skye’s left as we neared the encampment. Her hand trembled on my forearm and I patted her cold, red fingers. “You should have gloves.”

“My cape has pockets.”

“Your cape has pockets?” I chuckled and studied the flowing blue velvet she wore. The sable-lined hood brought out the warmth of her brown eyes and clasped at her neck with a brass medallion depicting the same floral leaf pattern embroidered along the edges of her cape in a heavy gold thread. The effect was stunning and she deserved to know. I leaned close to her ear. “You are beautiful.”

She moved imperceptibly closer and I reluctantly straightened. We made enough of a spectacle of ourselves on the crest and the nearer we came to the tents, the more people there were watching us.

“Did you have this made?” I asked to distract myself from wanting to keep her close.

“I did. While you oversee an army and search for answers, I oversaw this.” There was no mistaking her tone. She was full of bitterness at such a womanly task. I wouldn’t let her train with any of the men the way she’d trained with Nickoli before he left. She was unhappy about it.

“I chose the color for you,” she said, less sourly.

That was promising. “Did you?”

“It reminded me of your eyes. The gold pattern is from a memory I have of the Enchanted Forest.”

“The singing garden by the lake? I thought they seemed familiar.”

“Why hasn’t Griffin reached out to us?” she asked abruptly. “Shouldn’t Nickoli be there by now? He’s been gone seven days. I’ve kept track. What if something—”

“Don’t.” I stopped walking. “Don’t dwell on all the things that can go wrong. You have to have faith.”

She removed her hand from my forearm and drew her cape closer around her body. Her arms disappearing in the many folds, her hands poking out to find those pockets she’d designed. I lifted the hood and covered her head, careful to draw the front over the dainty golden circlet crown she wore today. “No need to draw extra attention, milady.”

“Won’t they know who I am?” Her gaze flicked beyond my shoulder before returning to my face.

“Some will. Others will doubt the Queen would deign to leave the safety of her castle and enter this area.” Tension lined her eyes and once again I soothed her nerves. “I assure you you’re plenty safe here. We have enough guards positioned—”

“No”—she stepped around my body—“it isn’t that. The idea that these people, people who were torn from their homes and families, would think I would not walk among them.” Her shoulders squared as she pushed her hood from her head, revealing her dark waves and a crown that glittered in the sunlight for all to see.

“I want them to know who I am. I want them to know I will stop at nothing to save them.” She spun around and faced me, her head held high.

You want them to know you are a Queen. I smiled at the woman standing before me.
